I spend most of my waking hours practicing, teaching or thinking about yoga. Yet there remains so much to learn.

This photo exhibit, on display at the Asian Art Museum in San Fransisco, reminded me that I have an obligation to do so, as did the experts I met with this weekend at the Yoga Service Council’s conference at Omega.

Yoga is much more than physical asana practice, though that’s a good place to start.
‘Maybe you came to yoga to lower your blood pressure. Or to lose weight. Or to get a nice round yoga butt. Let the yoga be bigger than your ass.’ -Leo Eisenstein
Raja yoga (royal yoga or royal union) aims at the cultivation of the mind using a succession of steps, culminating in samadhi (higher awareness) and kaivalya (freedom).

This is a massive undertaking…and a very personal one. Even though I admire my friends who do so, I probably won’t be waking up at 4am to practice on a daily basis. I probably won’t start my day with a cold shower any time soon, at least not intentionally. But that are a lot of things that I am doing, and so can you.
